painting with milk paint...

Bonjour from a very windy SW France,

We started the morning with a trip to a local Brocante in a nearby village. The village is perched high on a hill so you can imagine the chaos that the wind caused hence sun umbrellas had to be tightly secured and you could hear items falling to  the ground. Nice to see so many friendly faces but alas no tresors for us this morning.

This week I received a surprise package in the mail from a dear guest of ours. Inside the lovely box was some Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint samples. You all know me by now and how I love to paint.

Our house is a shrine to Farrow and Ball and I have transformed many items in  the house using Annie Sloan Chalk paint. I have heard that Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint is currently the rage in London so was eager to try it out.

I hunted in the garage for something to paint and came up with an old barometer. I decided to try Shutter Gray and as the item had been varnished instead of mixed the powdered paint mixture with water, I mixed it with the bonding agent adherent.

The mixture looked a bit thick but went on surprisingly well and I ended up using only one coat.

Whilst painting the barometer French Boyfriend arrived and commented on the mixture, he is a painter of landscapes etc. and has sold over 4 000 paintings hence he prefers canvas to furniture....

This is the finished result which I have now hung in the stairwell of Maison No. 20.

I love the colour and cannot wait to try out the other colours but need to find some times that need transforming first.

Mille mercis to "Madame X" for sending me such a thoughtful gift but I think that you have created a painting monster as I am now in the mood to paint......

très bon week-end à tous, Leeann

p.s. I will be back tomorrow to announce the winner of the fabulous book giveaway.

French Food Friday...Chicken in White Wine

Chicken in White Wine Recipe Ideas - Healthy & Easy Recipes

recipe and photo from here

Bonjour mes belles,

This recipe is an old favourite of mine and is a recipe that I use all year round. Simple and yet tasty, my favourite style of cuisine.

Chicken in White Wine

  • Serves 4

  • Preparation 20 mins

  • Cooking 50 mins
  • Ingredients

    • 600ml (20fl oz) dry white wine
    • 2tbsp olive oil
    • 1 lemon quarter
    • 2 bay leaves
    • 4 sprigs of thyme
    • 4 free-range chicken thighs (skin on)
    • 4 free-range chicken breasts (skin on)
    • 50g (13/4oz) butter
    • 150g (5oz) lardons or 6 rashers streaky bacon, diced
    • 1 tbsp plain flour
    • 8 small shallots, peeled
    • 250g (8oz) small mushrooms
    • 1 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

    Method

    1. Combine the wine, oil, lemon quarter, bay leaves and thyme in a large bowl. Add the chicken pieces, cover and marinate in the fridge for 24 hours.
    2. Heat the oven to 150°C (gas mark 2). Remove the chicken from the marinade and pat dry with kitchen paper. Heat half the butter in a large heavy flameproof casserole over a medium heat. Add the lardons or bacon and cook, stirring for about 2 minutes. Add the chicken thighs and fry until golden, then remove and add the breast and cook until golden. Remove from the casserole and set aside.
    3. Sprinkle the flour over the base of the casserole and cook, stirring to mix together the fat and the flour, for 1 minute, or until golden. Slowly add the marinade (including the herbs and bay leaves), stirring with a wooden spoon to mix the flour and wine together. Bring to a simmer over a low heat. Return the chicken and bacon to the casserole, cover and place in the oven for 30 minutes.
    4. Meanwhile, heat the remaining butter in a large frying pan and add the shallots. Sauté over a medium heat for about 5 minutes, then add the mushrooms and sauté until golden. Add the shallots and mushrooms to the casserole, cover and cook for a further 20 minutes. Season to taste, sprinkle with parsley and serve from the casserole.

    Tip

You can use any cut of chicken for this dish, but remember to cook breasts for a shorter time than meat that's on the bone, as those pieces will take longer.

    ....bon appetite à tous, Leeann

    Fabulously French Giveaway...

Bonjour from a very showery SW France,

Today we have Spring showers and it is the perfect weather for curling up with a good book and not feeling guilty.....

Today I am offering you, my lovely readers, the chance to win a signed copy of "The French for Love" written by local author Fiona Valpy.

I can honestly say that I’ve read lots of novels set in Provence where the descriptions bring back great memories of vacations spent in the villages and picture perfect scenery.

What I really liked about this book is that it is set not far from us and the descriptions of the area really are spot on and it made me feel like I knew the characters from the beginning.

Here is a summary of the book, as supplied by Fiona....
Gina has lost her perfect job, her boyfriend and her favourite aunt all within the space of a few months.

So when she inherits her aunt’s ramshackle French house, Gina decides to pack her bags for the Bordeaux countryside – swapping the miserable English weather for blue skies, sunshine, great wine and a fresh start.

What she hasn’t factored in is a hole in the roof, the most embarrassing language faux pas, and discovering family secrets that she was never supposed to know.

Suddenly feeling a long way from home, Gina will have to rely on new found friends, her own hard work – and Cédric – her charming, mysterious and très handsome new stonemason.
But whilst desire needs no translation, love is a different matter.  Can Gina overcome the language barrier to make her French dream come true?

Like a glass of wine in the French afternoon sunshine – The French for Love is the perfect summer escape.

I enjoyed reading the book and found it easy to read and think that it would make a perfect "take on holiday" book as it is easy to pick up from where you left off.

For your chance to win a copy of this fabulous book, please leave a comment below and I will draw a winner on Sunday.

bonne chance à tous, Leeann x

    week-end tresors...

    Bonjour mes belles,

I hope that you had a nice week-end. Ours started with a visit to a house that contained over 5,000 antique French books.

Every room in the house was overflowing with books and it was overwhelming to say the least.

As we are not book experts we chose a select few that we thought would be of interest to our clients and at the same time, are very decorative in nature, should we need some books to decorate with.

One that I found amusing and loved the illustrations in which, is called Le Sourire, or "the Smile". It is a French satirical, risqué journal that featured top notch artistic talent.

It was published in Paris on the Boulevard Saint-Germain. The journal first appeared in 1899 and ran until the final year of the Great War. Each issue included sixteen pages of large illustrations plus a color cover.

The book contains 52 issues starting with 6 janvier 1927, and there is an issue for each week of the year.

It was a very cold and rainy start to the day yesterday which meant that a lot of the sellers at a local vide grenier, packed up and went home.

Hence all that I came away with, was this stunning Louis XVI style wall light. Unfortunately there was only one but I think that it would look great in a small hall or in a powder room.

You will find more details here. Note it is a quality item and as a result, weighs quite a lot.

Back to the books I must go.

Bonne et douce semaine à tous, Leeann x

    Geox x Valemour Capsule Collection

Geox has launched its new accessory line Geox for Valemour yesterday. A special collection of hand-painted sneakers, bags and scarves. To realize it Geox has teamed-up with an Italian social nonprofit organization called Valemour that which helps young adults with mental disabilities to find employment and start a job.
This project has involved 40 young adults that have haind-painted 6.500 sheets used to make all accessories. As a result each one is unique and different from the other. The Valemour collection will be available online and in Geox stores in Italy.

French food Froday..Chocolate pudding fleur de sel

Chocolate galore! Chocolate pudding fleur de sel

     recipe and photo from here

Author of the bestseller Chocolat, Joanne Harris has another fabulous book for us and it involves chocolate and recipes so is sure to be another best seller...

Many of you may already know that the  word ‘pudding’ comes from the French word boudin; for sausage or blood pudding – though this pudding has little resemblance to that. Here, the sponge is given a twist with butter caramel and fleur de sel, an artisan sea salt – although any flaked sea salt will do.

    Chocolate pudding fleur de sel

    Serves 6-8
    Butter for greasing tin
100g (3½oz) dark chocolate, broken into pieces
    150g (5½oz) butter, soft
    150g (5½oz) unrefined caster sugar
    3 eggs
    25g (1oz) cocoa powder
    ¼tsp sea salt
    150g (5½oz) self-raising flour
    2tbsp milk
    For the caramel sauce
    75g (2¾oz) butter
    150g (5½oz) unrefined brown sugar
    2tbsp golden syrup
    150ml (5fl oz) double cream
A pinch of fleur de sel (from delicatessens)

    Butter a 1kg (2lb 4oz) pudding basin generously.
Melt the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water.
In a separate bowl, whisk the butter and sugar. Add the eggs and whisk again.
Pour in the melted chocolate, cocoa and sea salt, then whisk until smooth. Fold in the flour, then stir in the milk and mix well.
Put into the prepared pudding basin, cover with clingfilm and tie with string, making a handle to lift. Place in a large saucepan.
Pour in enough hot water to come halfway up the side of the pudding basin, then place on the hob, covered, and bring to the boil.
Reduce heat and simmer for 1½-2 hours. Constantly check the water and add more if needed.
To make the sauce, melt the butter, sugar and golden syrup in a small saucepan over a low heat, stirring until smooth and bubbling.
Add the cream and fleur de sel or sea salt, stir, then set aside.
Check if the pudding is cooked by inserting a knife in the centre – the blade should come out clean. Once cooked, remove the clingfilm and allow to sit for 5 minutes. Then, carefully run a palette knife around the edge and place a plate on the pudding basin; turn the basin over, shake and release the pudding on to the plate.
Spoon over a little of the caramel sauce, sprinkle with a few salt crystals and serve with the extra sauce in a jug.

Skin Perfection is L'Oréal's new skincare range for 25-35 skins.
My fave product of the range is their serum. It's perfect before applying make up and it's almost a dupe of his famous (and more expensive) brother the "Visionnaire Serum" by Lancôme.
And what do you think of the bright pink packaging? I love looking at it on my white bathroom shelf!

Beauty | Diptyque "L'Art du Soin" Skincare Range

Sembra complicato all'inizio ma personalmente mi piace molto.

I'm sure you all already know and love Diptyque's scented candles and frangrances.
Now they have launched their new skincare range, called "L'Art du Soin".
Six luxury products with some kind of different textures - that "change" with water or the warmth of your hands - and that are heavenly scented. Their packaging is obviously great as well (also the samples I tried have the cutest packaging).

    jardin de printemps...

    Bonjour mes belles,

Yesterday afternoon we paid our lovely "flower man" a visit as I needed more flowers to put in the apartments.

I managed to get some photographs of his lovely garden before he started picking.

Almost too lovely too pick but that said, the house looks lovely with it's burst of Spring colour.

Re the tablecloth and serviettes I have had a few emails overnight asking if I would split the tablecloth and napkins up, the answer is yes, the price for the napkins would be 90 euros and 60 euros for the tablecloth. If you are interested, please email me.

    à demain, Leeann x
